Bill would let people 75 and older park for free

LANSING - Legions of senior citizens may be getting another perk to go along with the occasional meal discount – free parking.

A bill introduced last week in the state senate would provide free parking to anyone over the age of 75.

Seniors would have to get a free parking sticker from the Michigan Secretary of State. The sticker would entitle them to free parking in metered spaces or in publicly-owned parking ramps and lots.

It is the second piece of legislation aimed at giving senior drivers a break. A bill introduced in January would exempt people 65 and older from increases in vehicle registration fees.

Both bills have been referred to the Senate Transportation Committee.
