Amash gets first Democratic challenger in 2018 race

Republican Congressman Justin Amash now has his first named Democratic challenger.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH - A Grand Rapids native is looking to challenge Justin Amash in next year's 3rd District congressional race.

Jeff Thomas is web designer who started his own company.

"I think the big difference between me and congressman Amash is fundamentally what our philosophy of government is, congressman Amash has a very narrow view of what our government should do," Thomas said.

Thomas is running as a Democrat and has strong feelings on several issues, including healthcare.

"I think the big thing in our society is we need to move away from the idea that insurance is something that people should get through their employer," Thomas said. "It's making our small businesses and big businesses less competitive."

Thomas also says he's passionate about education.

"Having smaller class sizes, offering early college programs to high school students, those things improve performance and outcome, so I want to make sure schools have the resources to do that," Thomas said.
