Love Muskegon Fireworks

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) - Music, art and fireworks - Muskegon residents have relied on the Muskegon Summer Celebration to provide that entertainment combination for years, but the festival is gone and others are stepping in to fill holes left by its departure.

There was disappointment on the lakeshore when Summer Celebration folded. Bob Scolnik knew the festival's fireworks would be missed, so he went to work using Facebook.

"This was a bad blow for the community," Scolnik told WZZM 13's Jon Mills. "And within a few days we had more than enough money to have fireworks."

The Free Fireworks on the 4th of July will launch around 10:20 from the point at Heritage Landing. The Community Foundation for Muskegon County kicked in $10,000. Scolnik raised $17,000.

Over at Hackley Park, 200 vendors are selling arts and crafts all weekend. Art in the Park was organized this year by Meridian Entertainment from Lansing.

And at Heritage Landing on Friday and Saturday, Rockstock! 19 Michigan bands will be performing. Rockstock moved their dates up to this weekend and to this stage for the first time.

Next year at this time, all three events will likely be offered by an unnamed festival that's being formed to replace Summer Celebration.

The only big Summer Celebration event not replaced was the carnival.
