Volunteers floated the Muskegon River and picked up cans and bottles along the way.

MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) - The number of empty cans left behind by people floating down the Muskegon River has become an issue for some.

A group of concerned citizens led by Jerry Carlson organized a beer can clean up Sunday.  The group took off from the Bridgeton boat launch around noon.

They picked up cans and trash as they floated down the river.  Carlson says "We got a mess in this river, and it ain't going nowhere without somebody helping, so we have to do something."

Everyone that brought in 50 cans they collected from the river was entered into a drawing to win a kayak or gift cards.  Carlson hopes to make the river clean up an annual event.
