SILVER LAKE, Mich. (WZZM) -- An expensive collection of guns is missing from an Oceana County home and investigators are asking for your help to find them. The break-in and robbery happened earlier this week at a home on 34th Avenue, just outside of Silver Lake.
Deputies are searching for the person who took several flatscreen televisions, a golf cart, and 10 guns. Among the missing firearms are rifles, shotguns, and pistols. But the most valuable was a .454 Casull.
Lt. Craig Mast of the Oceana County Sheriff's Department says the stolen property is valued at about $20,000. Lt. Mast believes the thieves spent a lot of time inside the house. "He (the homeowner) did have a gun safe, and the safe was defeated."
Lt. Mast suspects the thieves are looking for ways to get rid of the guns, like swapping them for quick cash at a pawn shop, or listing multiple guns for one low prices online or in print.
Lt. Mast recommends every gun owner record their guns' serial numbers and photograph their collection. "If they would take pictures of and get a good description of those guns-- the case they are in and any custom work that they might have on them-- it would make it a lot easier on us to track those guns down."
Keep the photos in a place away from the guns, and if your collection is ever taken police can enter the information into the National Crime Information Center's database. If the guns are ever recovered there's a good chance you'll get them back.
The homeowner is offering a $2,000 reward for the tip that leads to an arrest and return of the guns. Tips can be left at Silent Observer at (888) 786-7274
