3 people hospitalized after boating accident on Gun Lake

Updates on Gun Lake boating accident

BARRY COUNTY, MICH. -

Three people have been hospitalized, one in critical condition, after a boating accident on Gun Lake on Saturday afternoon. 

According to the sheriff's department, a boat and Seadoo personal watercraft collided in the lake just after 4 p.m. The driver of the personal watercraft, a 19-year-old Grand Rapids man, was injured and knocked unconscious. The driver of the boat, a 55-year-old Hastings man, jumped into the water to help.

The boat driver kept the 19-year-old's face out of the water, however he was not wearing a life jacket and began to get exhausted. Several Good Samaritan citizens helped get the two men our of the water, onto a boat and to shore where emergency responders were located for treatment.

The 19-year-old was taken to Spectrum Butterworth for head and face injuries. The boat driver was taken to Pennock Spectrum due to other health conditions. The two men remain in the hospital, but are both in stable condition. 

The wife of the boat driver was also thrown into the water after the collision. It is unknown at what point she when into the water or why she stopped breathing, but she was found floating face up -- not breathing or wearing a life jacket. 

A Middleville family found her and gave her rescue breaths until first responders could get into the family's boat and begin CPR. They took her to shore and transported her to Spectrum Pennock in critical condition. 

The names of the victims involved are being withheld per family requests. 

The Barry County Sheriff's Office Marine Division encourages anyone who may have seen the woman enter the water call the office with information at 269-948-4801.
