GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)-- You've more than likely seen the hokey commercial for a product called the Snuggie, the blanket with sleeves. More than 4 million of these things have been sold; it even has its own Facebook page with over 12,000 followers, and endless spoofs on YouTube.
But I wanted to know if it was a big waste of money. What I found out is people who are fans of the Snuggie commercial would own one just to say they have a Snuggie. But for those of us who are a little more practical, here's my assessment.
It's an oversized blanket with sleeves... and I mean over-sized. The sleeves are really long, and if you want to walk around in it, you'll likely trip over it.
It's very thin fleece, very much like an airplane blanket, but surprisingly warm if you're just hanging out on the couch. Using it for warmth outside though, it's probably too thin.
Even though it has sleeves, it doesn't stay up over your shoulders very well, so really, it's not that different from a plain 'ol blanket. It seems to have a lot of static, so it kind of sticks to you.
My biggest beef about it... it has no back. So, if you wear it the way it's intended, it's like a backwards robe. Like one of my Facebook friends said, "It's like a fuzzy hospital robe," meaning you feel a little exposed in the back. Which means it's not good for those outdoor sporting events or cozy outdoor fires. Your bum will get cold or dirty. For that reason, I'd stick with a blanket.
The Seen on Screen store in Muskegon sells them for $14.99, but you can buy two of them through the commercial or online for $19.95 (plus shipping), plus you get a free book light!
