GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM)- One person is dead and another has been hospitalized with serious injuries following a shooting on Grand Rapids' southwest side overnight.
Mallory Ashlyn Mathews, 21, died from her injuries. Her boyfriend, 28-year-old Chad Brian Lax remains in hospital with serious injuries.
Mathews was staying in a house right across the street from where she was gunned down and killed.
"She was a real sweetheart," said neighbor Corey Glover. "She would treat everyone with respect. It was always a smile when you talked to her."
It happened at around 2:05 Wednesday morning, several people called police to report gunfire on National Street northwest near Fulton St.
"I heard a bang bang bang. I thought at first it was fireworks but it doesn't go that quick," said neighbor Linda Cohn. "And I heard a woman scream 'oh my God, oh my God, are you alright?' ...and then I called 911."
Neighbors speculated the attack may have been retaliation for a separate shooting Lax was believed to be involved in.
"They were both just trying to straighten their lives out," said Glover. "Get their stuff together and move forward."
Officers later pulled over a vehicle matching the description of one found at the scene a few blocks away on Commerce Avenue and Weston Street. They found the two victims inside.
The female driver is believed to be related to Lax and told police she was taking the pair to the hospital. Mathews was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have a basic description of the suspect, saying he is a 5' 10" male wearing a hooded jacket and baggy pants. He was seen running south along National Ave. SW after the shooting.
"It's scary. I'm shaking like a leaf just thinking about it. Not because I'm cold either," said Cohn. "I hope this never happens again."
