GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Three former Grand Rapids schools may become new apartment buildings.
A developer based in Troy, wants to buy Oakdale, Lexington and Eastern Elementary schools and turn them into rental properties. The developer has offered $1.6 million for the three buildings which were listed for a combines $2.1 million. School officials say the offer is in the early stages but it is a valid proposal.
GRPS spokesman John Helmholdt says, "There is an expense to the district to just maintain an empty building. And it's an eyesore for the neighborhoods. That's why we want to work with the neighbors. I think they are eager to see some type of development occur."
The district will hold community meetings to get input on the proposal. The board could make a decision by later this month. However the developer has to get zoning approval from the city before the sale is finalized.
