GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- Medical experts say repealing the helmet law could dramatically increase the number of serious brain injuries.
The helmet law in Michigan may have changed ,but Steve Hutson's advice to customers at Fox Power Sports remains the same.
"They're there for a reason, to protect people so they can come home to their families and be safe," says Hutson.
Doctors say there is no replacement for a helmet.
"There is protection when someone's head hits the pavement. Some of those forces go to the helmet and never make it to the skull or brain," says Dr. Stephen Bloom, a brain injury specialist.
Dr. Bloom says helmets also help with sound by making it easier for riders to hear noises around them. Bloom says that helps prevent accidents in the first place.
