GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - There's a new democratic candidate challenging Roy Schmidt in the state House. Friday morning, local democrats introduced Winnie Brinks as the write-in democratic candidate for the 76th District.

Brinks is a Grand Rapids resident currently working as a caseworker at The Source. Brinks previously served as Executive Director of The One Way House and as an active member of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). She also recently was a paraprofessional in the Godfrey Lee Public School District.

"I am not a politician I have never run for office before. All I can do is pledge to you that I will do all that I can to win this race. I promise that I will restore honestly and integrity to this seat, and that I will represent you in the way you expect and deserve," said Brings.

She is challenging state Representative Roy Schmidt who switched parties last month from democrat to republican. The previous democratic candidate, Matt Mojzak is being investigated for possible campaign fraud.
