GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - While nationwide polls show the race for president to be close, the latest poll of Michigan voters shows a different story.
The Glengariff Group conducted a 600-sample survey of likely 2012 Michigan General Election voters. The telephone survey was conducted from September 15-17 for WZZM 13, WDIV-TV, and the Detroit News.
In August, President Obama had a six point lead over Mitt Romney. But this latest poll shows Obama's lead has grown to 14 points in September: Obama 52%, Romney 38%, and 8% undecided.
Obama leads in all areas of the state including West Michigan, but the margins are strikingly different. In West Michigan it's Obama 47%, Romney 38%. However in Detroit, according to this poll, Obama leads 92.5% with 5% undecided, and 2.5% for Romney.
The president's strength is among African Americans, women, and young people. During the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, the Glengariff poll shows a fundamental shift of independent women to the Democratic Party.
AlthougH the president has a double digit lead, Michiganders still don't think things are going that well for the state or the country. In Michigan, 35% say things are better off, but 65% say things are either worse off or the same.
Nationwide, 59% they say things are either worse or the same. Just 39% say things are better.
