18 year old hits tree, killed in Byron Township crash

BYRON TWP., MICH. - The Kent County Sheriff’s Department say an 18 year old was killed in a car crash early Sunday morning.

It happened at 12:50 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, on 68th Street SW, just east of Wilson Avenue SW in Byron Township.

Police say a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix was eastbound on 68th Street SW, when 18-year-old Tyler VanderWest of Wyoming lost control and struck a tree.

VanderWest was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed appears to be a factor, and police report he was not wearing a seat belt. The crash remains under investigation.
