17-year-old boy hit, killed by Amtrak train in Lawton

LAWTON, MICH. - Tyler Wirtz, 17, of Bronson, Mich., was attempting to flee his truck, which appeared to be stuck on the train tracks, when he was hit and killed by an Amtrak train on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

First responders attempted to rescue Wirtz, but he eventually succumbed to his injuries and passed away at Bronson Lakeview Hospital. His family has been notified.

Michigan State Police and Van Buren County Sheriff's Deptartment were on scene to assist Lawton Police.

Preliminary investigation into the accident determined that Wirtz's truck was stuck on the train tracks and he was attempting to get free when he was struck by the eastbound train. The cross signal did activate as the train approached.

The accident is under continued investigation, and anyone with further information is asked to call Lawton Police at 269-624-2382.
