The crash happened around 8 a.m. Wednesday on westbound I-96 near the 88th Avenue overpass.

COOPERSVILLE, MICH. - Smoke could be seen for miles in Ottawa County near a fatal car versus tree accident early Wednesday, Oct. 19.

The accident occurred around 8 a.m. on westbound I-96 near the 88th Avenue overpass.

Witnesses say the driver, identified Monday, Oct. 24, as 22-year-old Andrew Passinault of Grand Rapids, was driving erratically to the point where they lost control and left the highway. At that time, the vehicle went airborne and crash landed into a tree.

Other drivers pulled over to help, but say the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames almost immediately.

At this time, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department believes there was only one person in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Deputies say the right lane of westbound I-96 will remain closed while the crash scene is investigated.
