Woman falls asleep while driving, crashes into semi on Lake Michigan Drive

Lake Michigan Drive Crash

OTTAWA COUNTY, MICH. - A car versus semi crash shut down part of Lake Michigan Drive near M-231 Thursday around 3:30 p.m. Ottawa county dispatch says, one patient was involved and Aero Med  was called to the scene. 

According to MDOT, Lake Michigan drive is shut down between 120th and 128th avenues due to the crash. 

Police say a 2016 Chevrolet Spark, driven by Merissa Witt, 26, was traveling eastbound on Lake Michigan Drive at the time of the crash. Her car veered into the westbound lane and hit a Zeeland Farm Services freight liner driven by 45-year-old Mark Manschesky, while he was trying to turn onto M-231.

A third vehicle, a 2001 GMC pick-up truck driven by 33-year-old Mark Bawcum was driving next to the semi-truck at the time of the crash and was hit by the semi. His truck rolled over. 

Neither men were injured. Witt was trapped in her car and needed to be pulled from the wreck. She was flown to a hospital by AeroMed, police listing her condition as critical although she was conscious and alert when taken away.

She told police that she had fallen asleep while driving. 

Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says this crash remains under investigation.
