GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - It's a real traffic headache in downtown Grand Rapids. Construction has begun on Michigan Street, which is leading to significant delays.
"It added to my commute about 15 minutes, but my co-worker, it took him an hour from Hudsonville," says one driver.
Delays are happening on a two-block stretch from Monroe to Ionia Avenue. Crews are reconstructing the road. City officials say they realize it's a tough situation.
"It is tough. We recognize that. We've tried to minimize the amount of disruptions. We advise people, if you can, to alter your schedule. If you work downtown and can vary your hours, think about that and look for alternative routes," says Rick DeVries a city engineer.
The best alternative routes are Fulton and Leonard streets. The Michigan Street construction project is expected to be complete by June.
