Police officer injured after patrol car hits utility pole, rolls over several times

BENTON HARBOR, MICH. - A Benton Harbor police officer was injured in a rollover crash while trying to respond to a reported assault on Sunday morning.

According to a news release from the Berrien County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened just before 9 a.m. at the intersection of East Britain and Columbus avenues. The officer, driving a patrol SUV, was attempting to pass another SUV on E Britain Avenue -- deputies say his lights and sirens were on at the time.

The driver of the other SUV tried to turn left on Columbus Avenue and struck the officer's patrol car. Sheriff's deputies say the cruiser then hit a nearby utility pole and rolled over several times before coming to rest in a vacant lot.

The officer was pinned inside of the cruiser and needed to be removed by rescue crews. He was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, reportedly conscious and alert at the scene.

The driver of the other SUV, his passenger and six children were not injured in the crash.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Office Accident Investigation team will be conducting a full investigation of the incident.
