Sleepy driver might have caused crash that closed I-196

Rollover crash closed I-196 fore an hour

GANGES TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A sleepy driver likely caused his vehicle to roll off I-196 near the Lakeshore, prompting the highway's closure as rescuers tended to several people hurt.

The male driver, who has not been identified, was among a total of four people injured: three of which were taken to Holland Hospital while one other was taken to a Grand Rapids hospital by helicopter.

Their medical conditions are not known.

Crews were called just after 9:40 a.m. Monday, June 26, to the area of westbound I-196 just south of 124th Avenue, according to Lt. Michael McLeieer of the Saugatuck Township Fire District.

Authorities say the driver reported to them that he might have fallen asleep. There are skid marks on the highway to where it left the road, McLeieer said.
