Southbound U.S. 31 reopens following pile-ups

UPDATE: 5 p.m.

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) -- Southbound U.S. 31 has reopened between Laketon Avenue and I-96.

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) -- A 3.5 mile stretch of southbound U.S. 31 is closed in Muskegon County because of numerous crashes on snowy roads.

MDOT has shutdown the southbound U.S. 31 lanes from Laketon Avenue to I-96 in Norton Shores.

Around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, there was a large pile-up involving several semi trucks at Sherman Avenue. At the same time, there was a chain reaction crash involving multiple vehicles at southbound U.S. 31 near Broadway Avenue in Fruitport Township.

Police say it could take hours to clear up all the wrecks and the highway could be closed for an extended period of time. Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes.

Further north on U.S. 31, an ambulance slid off the highway near M-120. According to scanner reports, neither the ambulance driver, another paramedic, or a mother and infant inside were hurt. A second ambulance was called to transport the passengers to the hospital.
