Police chase forces south US 131 at Wealthy Street to close

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Southbound US-131 at Wealthy Street was shut down for several hours while to police pursued a driver suspected of being drunk. 

The Wealthy Street exit (exit 84) on southbound US-131 closed just before 10 p.m. Friday, March 17, while police pursued a man they suspected of being drunk while driving.

Police attempted to stop the man around 9:40 p.m. near U.S. 131 and West River Drive. The man refused to stop and begin to elude the police. He traveling south on U.S. 131, eventually stopping near Wealthy Street when police say he produced a gun and fired one shot to himself causing serious injury, according to a Michigan State Police news release. 

No police were harmed during this incident.

He is currently listed in critical condition at the hospital. The man's name is being withheld by police until his family is notified.

The incident forced authorities to shut down all of the southbound lanes for a couple of hours while the assisting crews cleaned up the scene. 

Police say this incident is now an ongoing investigation.
