Zeeland (WZZM)-- Commercials for the Perfect Bacon Bowl make your mouth water and had viewers writing in to have me test it out. It comes with four separate molds that you wrap in bacon and bake, forming bite-sized edible bacon bowls you can fill with endless possibilities.
I took the bacon bowls to Public in downtown Zeeland where Chef Luke Grill says his menu lets folks know every recipe can be enhanced with the addition of bacon. He helped me try them out.
The directions call for three pieces of bacon per mold, taking two halves and crisscrossing them across the bottom of the mold, then wrapping the other two pieces of bacon tightly around forming the bowl. They go in the over at 375 degrees for 35 minutes, but we found to get the bowls cooked completely, it takes more like 45 minutes.
We had some issues with the bacon sticking, but we found the longer we cooked them and allowed them to sit, they popped off easier. We also found you'll have some holes or gaps in your bowl if you don't layer or wrap the bacon carefully.
We filled the bacon bowls and ended up with some amazing creations. Bacon bowl wedge salad, macaroni and cheese filled bacon bowls, a unique french fries and cheese curd bacon bowl, and finally, a bacon bowl dessert with brown butter gelato.
The bacon was crisp and the bowl held together nicely when you took a bite. It held quite a bit of food, which made it less of a finger food and more of a heavy hors d'oeuvres.
We found the Perfect Bacon Bowl online for $10, buy one get one free, with separate shipping and processing, but we're told from stores like Bed Bath & Beyond they'll begin carrying it soon.
