U.S. Rep. John Conyers hospitalized amid sexual assault allegations

Conyers hospitalized, amid call for his resignation from top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi

DETROIT - U.S. Rep. John Conyers was hospitalized overnight and remains there, his lawyer, Arnold Reed, confirmed for the Free Press on Thursday morning.

Reed said he would not discuss details about Conyers’ condition or release what hospital he went to. He said he assumed the reason for the hospitalization was stress related.

This comes the same day that top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi called on Conyers to resign, according to the Associated Press.

Political consultant Sam Riddle said Conyers' wife, Monica Conyers, is by his side.

"We ask that the nation pray for the congressman's recovery," he told the Free Press via text message.

He also spoke with reporters earlier Thursday: "I just spoke with (Conyers' wife) Monica Conyers on the phone, and we'd like to let you know that the congressman is resting comfortably at an area hospital," he said on video in a tweet shared by Channel 7 (WXYZ-TV) reporter Shelley Childers. "He's doing OK; as well as can be expected for a gentleman that's approaching 90 years of age."

The announcement came shortly after a former staff member of Conyers appeared on the Today Show and accused him of "violating my body" among a number of sexual misconduct claims.

The congressman returned from Washington, D.C., to Detroit earlier this week, amid multiple allegations of sexual harassment.
