HOUSTON (WZZM) - After the recent mass shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin a video made late last month has gone viral. The movie was made in Houston, Texas by the mayor's Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security.
It lays out key steps if you were ever to find yourself in what they call an "active shooter" event.
"If you were ever to find yourself in the middle of an active shooter event, your survival may depend on whether or not you have a plan," states a narrator.
The video was made after the shooting at a packed movie theater in Aurora, Colorado and is meant to grab someone's attention from the moment they hit play. The video says there are three things you can do to increase your chances of safety and survival. First, run away if there's a safe way to get out. Once you are out of the line of fire. keep others from walking into the danger zone and call 911. If you can't get away, find a place to hide, turn off the lights, lock the doors and turn your cell phone off. And finally--and only as a last resort: Fight.
"If your life is at risk, whether you're alone or working together as a group, fight, act with aggression, improvise weapons, disarm him and commit to taking the shooter down."
The video has more than 422,000 views on YouTube.
