GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The weather during the month of August was typically warm while sunnier and drier than usual. The summer season (June, July and August), however, was unusually hot, while a lot sunnier with much less rainfall than usual.
Temperatures during August averaged 70.8°F, which is exactly average, but it was 1.0°F cooler than last year (71.8°F). Fourteen days were warmer than usual, fourteen were cooler and three were considered average. The highest temperature occurred on August 3 with 93°F while the lowest temperature occurred on August 18 with 48°F. The summer season averaged 73.6°F, 3.0°F above average, making it the second warmest summer on record after 1921 (74.6°F). Summer 2012 was also 0.9° warmer than last summer (72.7°F).
Precipitation was a little below average last month measuring 3.34", 0.25" less than usual and 1.08" less than last year (4.42"). There were eight days with measurable precipitation, which is one day less than usual (9). Summer precipitation was well below average with 8.07", 3.07" less than usual and 6.56" less than last summer (14.63").
There was 72.4% of the possible sunshine last month, 10.9% more than usual and nearly equal to last year (72.3%). There were eleven clear days - three more than average (8), sixteen partly cloudy days - five more than usual (11), and four cloudy days - eight fewer than average (12). Summer sunshine amounted to 77.1%, 11.4% more than usual, making it the fourth sunniest on record, and 4.8% more than last year (72.3%).
Thunderstorms were recorded on August 4, 16, and 19.
Daily temperature records: High 62°F on August 10 was a record low maximum, breaking the previous record of 65°F set in 1994.
Daily rainfall records: 1.80" of rain on August 10 broke the previous record of 1.42" set in 1916.
