Grand Rapids (WZZM) - One of the most popular events to celebrate winter in Grand Rapids didn't happen as planned.
WinterWest's cardboard sled race was canceled.
"Yeah, we are pretty bummed we had to cancel it at the last minute," said Kyle Van Strien, WinterWest Organizer. "It was basically an insurance requirement that we didn't know about in advance, but we felt like we really needed to have it taken care of if we were gonna do it."
Organizers posted the cancelation on their website this weekend. In years past, dozens have gone to Richmond Park to sled down the big hill in homemade sleds
Even though the WinterWest event was canceled, it didn't stop some from taking that ride anyway.
"We heard that it was canceled, but carboard sleds work really well anyway," said Nate Urnsberger, who lives on the west side of Grand Rapids. "This is great, seriously you don't need to spend a bunch of money on a sled, just go to your local grocery store, get a box, and sledding is just about having fun."
