Grand Rapids, MI (TAKE FIVE & CO) -- Drew Barrymore has been in "the biz" since the ripe old age of eleven months when she starred in a dog food commercial. She made her film debut at five in the movie "Altered States", and at six she landed her breakout role of "Gertie" in "E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial". Just three years later - at the age of nine, she earned a Golden Globe for her role in "Irreconcileable Differences." These days, the youngest member of the famed Hollywood Barrymore family has taken a new step - directing her first film. After getting some advice from her good friend, Steven Spielberg, Barrymore took the helm of "WHIP IT", a movie shot here in Michigan.
Caught between her mother's dream of beauty pageants and her newfound confidence in the tough world of roller derby. Oscar nominee Ellen Page stars as "Bliss Cavender". Interestingly, Barrymore had asked Page to star in the film even before her Oscar nominated role in "Juno".
Since the movie was shot here in Michigan, Barrymore felt it was only right to have the premiere of the film here. She took over the Bonaventure Skating Rink in Farmington Hills and invited the public. Stephanie Webb of "Take Five & Company" caught up with Drew to talk movie-making, puberty, and how she loved filming here in Michigan.
