West Michigan man receives a car after being selected as Local Hero contest winner

Founder of West Michigan charity "Lori's Voice" rewarded for his work

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - A West Michigan man received a customized 2016 Chrysler Town & Country wheelchair accessible, Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Dave Hastings, of Coopersville, won the Local Hero Contest, which received 928 entries and 1.1 million votes. The contest was put on for National Mobility Awareness Month in May, and FCA US, LLC, ElDorado Mobility and the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association sponsored the giveaway.

Hastings has been married to his wife, Lori for 33 years. Lori suffers from muscular dystrophy and Hastings serves as her primary caregiver. In 2012, he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Knowing the challenges that medical expenses can create for a family, Hastings founded the non-profit "Lori's Voice" that raises funds to assist with medical expenses not covered by insurance for children with special needs under the age of 18.
