Woman dies after boating accident on Gun Lake

BARRY COUNTY, MICH. - The wife of a boater involved in an Saturday afternoon accident on Gun Lake has died, authorities say.

According to the Barry County Sheriff's Office, Melanie Cybulski did not recover from injuries she sustained after jumping off her husband Eric's boat on Saturday.

Jacob Baker, of Grand Rapids, was driving a Seadoo personal watercraft when he collided with Eric Cybulski's boat. Baker was knocked unconscious and thrown into the water. Eric Cybulski jumped into the water to aid him and both were taken ashore and later hospitalized.

Melanie Cybulski also attempted to jump into the water to assist her husband. Witnesses say they saw Melanie swimming, thinking she was a Good Samaritan citizen helping out and then moments later noticed she was floating on her back. Witnesses believed she was just resting, however, when the Saindon family of Middleville checked on her, they found she was not breathing and began to give her rescue breaths and eventually CPR on her boat.

A news release from the sheriff's office states authorities are not sure why Melanie stopped breathing or exactly how long, however she was hospitalized in critical condition on Saturday.

On Sunday, July 2, Melanie did not recover from her injuries and died at the Blodgett Hospital.
