GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- Calvin College's award winning January Series include two speakers that have political backgrounds.
Michael Gerson is set to speak on January 12th about "Religion and Politics in a New Era." Along with the work he did for President George W. Bush, he's also a senior advisor at ONE, a bipartisan organization dedicated to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable diseases.
Meanwhile, Senior CNN Political Analyst and former presidential advisor David Gergen will be able to give guests a behind-the-scenes look at what's going on in the political world this month. He speaks January 18th.
According to those planning the January Series, inviting such speakers helps provide deep perspectives, especially for a core group of community members.
Director Kristi Potter says, "That's big news on Calvin's campus, any university campus, for students that haven't been able to vote for a President before and they want to know what's going on and they want to hear about issues."
Organizers say they intentionally worked to bring political speakers in this year because the speakers series focuses on the hot topics of the day.
There is room for 1,100 people inside the Covenant Fine Arts Center Auditorium where the speaker series is held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. throughout the month of January.
Also, remote webcasts are offered thoughout 34 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada.
The January Series officially kicks off Wednesday, January 4 with Sherry Turkle talking about technology.
The free January Series has been in existence for 25 years.
