SPARTA, Mich. (WZZM) -- Sparta administrators say they will check to make sure the heating system in one of their schools is working properly before classes resume Tuesday morning.

A viewer posted on WZZM 13's Facebook page Monday night about problems that day at Ridgeview Elementary School in Sparta.  Amy Jo Bonser posted that there was no heat at the school, and that students had to wear their coats during classes.

A notice from assistant superintendent Mark Kasmer was posted on the Sparta Area Schools website Monday.  In the statement, Kasmer says Ridgeview's heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system malfunctioned at some point over the weekend.  The district was also closed on Friday due to snow.  Because of these factors -- and because the HVAC settings automatically switched to an "economy level" setting -- the school was not able to be warmed up to normal temperatures by the time classes resumed.

Kasmer says the school's boiler was reset and functioning by 8 a.m. Monday, but circulating pumps were not working properly again until late morning.  He says the entire system was working properly as of noon Monday.

Kasmer says the system was checked at the end of the school day on Monday, and that it would be re-examined before classes on Tuesday morning.

In the statement, Kasmer apologizes for any inconveniences caused by the HVAC problems.
