Listeria Monocytogenes is the same kind of bacteria believed involved in a 2011 outbreak of listeriosis related to cantaloupe. Symptoms of listeriosis are similar to the flu, and can include nausea, muscle aches and a high fever. According to information from CNN.com, gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea may also appear. The length of time between infection and the appearance of symptoms is unknown.
According to CNN.com, listeriosis primarily affects the elderly, pregnant women, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems. In the U.S., an estimated 1,600 people become seriously ill each year; approximately 16% of these illnesses result in death.
In a news release issued Friday night, Sparta Stores says it has received no confirmation of any illnesses associated with the eating of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness is advised to contact their healthcare provider immediately.
Spartan Stores representatives say the products involved in the recall should be returned for a full refund or a replacement.
Anyone with questions about the recall may call Spartan Stores' consumer affairs number at (800) 451-8500, or Michael Foods customer service at (877) 367-3447.
