GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A driver who crashed her car under a large shipping truck told them she fell asleep at the wheel.

The accident happened around 2:40 p.mT thursday.  It closed the northbound lanes of U.S. 31 near Ferris Street in Grand Haven Township for about an hour.

Deputies say Mary Baars, 26, was driving north on U.S. 31 when she fell asleep.  She did not slow down for a semi stopped at the traffic signal at Ferris St.

Baars' car was about eight feet underneath the truck, pinning her inside.

Investigators say Baars may have suffered a broken arm, but nothing more serious than that injury.  The driver of the truck was not injured.  Both drivers wore their seatbelts.

Deputies cited Baars for careless driving.

Last week, a Muskegon man died on U.S. 31 near Holland after he drove his car underneath a semi-trailer. Investigators believe he may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
