KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) - An 85 year old Kentwood woman died after being trapped in her home as it caught fire.

According to witnesses May Colbert was in the upstairs bedroom. A neighbor tried to rescue her by climbing to the second story window on a ladder, but was overcome by smoke.

The fire started in the garage of the home on the 2100 block Bayhem Road around 2:30 Sunday afternoon then quickly spread to the home.

The woman had just been dropped off by her son after attending church together.

No word yet on what caused the fire but wittnesses say they heard an explosion shortly before the garage caught fire.
