GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)-West Michigan's largest grocery chain is celebrating a milestone.
This month marks 50 years since Meijer opened its first super center store. Meijer now operates nearly 200 super centers across the Midwest. The Meijer family says customers are to thank for their success; that's why they held a party at the site of their first super center in Grand Rapids Saturday.
"It opened in 1962 and there wasn't anything quite like it, with the food and general merchandise all under one roof," said Hank Meijer. "There were other people around the country experimenting with it, but we were really the first ones I guess that really mad the format work."
Visitors to the 28th Street and Kalamazoo Avenue location could also check out an antique truck like the one the Meijer family originally used.
