UPDATE: Police kill Ionia gunman in shootout

IONIA, Mich. (WZZM) - A man who opened fire Friday morning in Ionia has died after he was shot by police.

Around 11 a.m. officers responded to a report of a man with a long gun, walking in the area of Main and Yeomans-- that's just southwest of downtown Ionia near the Ionia Free Fairgrounds.

When Michigan State Police arrived on the scene the man started shooting, striking two people at a nearby house.

The suspect also fired shots at police, who returned fire, killing the gunman.

The two victims were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. WZZM 13's Peter Ross spoke with one of the victims, Troy Townsend. Hear from him tonight on WZZM 13 News at 6 p.m.
