HART, Mich. (WZZM) -- Every company has to start somewhere, and some of them have very humble beginnings -- which is the case with a Made in Michigan company that got its start at a family's home.

"It's awesome. We're already ahead of where we were last year this time. We're excited to be in 32 Meijer stores in the Michigan food section," says Mike Freestone.

Freestone and his family started making granola at their home in Holland. They got such a good response from friends and family, they turned it into a business called Good Life Granola in 2009.
The product is all natural.

"We source locally," says Freestone.  "Our fruit is from Michigan, and our oats we get in Zeeland. We use Michigan brown sugar and our maple syrup."

The product is made at a facility in Hart. It's already licensed by the FDA, MDA, and USDA. Several other local entrepreneurs work out of this same building, which is called "The Starting Block," a non-profit kitchen "incubator."

"This is a start-up place, and people usually spend up to three or four years here getting started," says office manager Jane Dosemagen says.  "Then, the businesses move on and grow."

Several businesses have done just that.  Freestone says Good Life Granola is on its way to growth.

"We would like to have it in all 50 states within the next five years," he says.

Freestone hopes to expand the manufacturing operation and eventually hire some employees. Currently, it's a family run business.

"It all comes from consumer demand," he says.  "We can't [expand] until there's more demand for the product."

Freestone encourages people to give it a try. He's convinced that once they do, they'll keep coming back for more.

Good Life Granola can be found in the Michigan Made section at several Meijer stores. It can also be purchased online.
