UPDATE 2:00PM (WZZM) - The teen killed in an early morning crash has been identified.
Wyatt Phillips, 16, of Cedar Springs, was killed when the car he was driving left the roadway and struck a tree on White Creek Road.
A passenger in the front seat, Johnny Klaasen, of Cedar Springs, was taken to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital with a non-life threatening shoulder injury. A passenger in the back seat, Sean Thompson, 16, from Sparta was pinned in the vehicle and was flown to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital by AeroMed with head and leg injuries.
Kent County Sheriff's Deputies say that they believe that excessive speed was the cause of the crash.
CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. (WZZM)- A Cedar Springs high school student was killed during a single-car crash on Thursday morning.
A Kent County Sheriff's Deputy tells WZZM 13 News that speed was a factor in the crash that happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
Three teenage boys were heading northbound on White Creek Road, just north of Wiersma Avenue when the car ran off the road and hit a tree.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the passengers was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The other boy sitting in the back seat had to be extricated and was flown out via AeroMed.
The Cedar Springs School District is setting up a crisis team in the media room at the high school. Students are encouraged to go there for counseling.
