Two rescued after zoo funicular breaks down

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - Grand Rapids firefighters rescued two people who were stranded when the new funicular at John Ball Zoo became stuck Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. Zoo spokeswoman Krys Bylund tells WZZM 13 the two guests were stranded about 18 feet off the ground for less than 30 minutes. Firefighters rescued the passengers using a ladder and a catwalk.

Crews are investigating what caused the funicular to malfunction. It is closed until at least Friday morning.

This is the latest in a number of setbacks for the multi-million dollar attraction at the John Ball Zoo. The tram was expected to open June 1, but it didn't open to the public until August 10 because of numerous mechanical problems.
