Public Safety Officer Eric Zapata
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- A Kalamazoo man who owned an assault rifle that was used to kill a police officer is returning to court for his sentence.
Kim Statler pleaded guilty in May to making 13 weapons accessible to two sons, who were ex-convicts. He was in Florida at the time.
Kalamazoo Officer Eric Zapata was fatally shot by Leonard Statler when police responded to shots being fired at Kim Statler's home in April 2011. Leonard Statler then killed himself.
Kim Statler faces up to two years in prison under the guidelines, although federal Judge Robert Jonker in Grand Rapids could go higher or lower. Prosecutors and Kalamazoo police are not making a specific recommendation.
