MANISTEE, Mich. (WZZM) - A ten-year-old girl suffered a broken leg Thursday afternoon when a large part of a rotted tree fell on her while she was eating an ice cream cone.
The Manistee Department of Public Safety reports that Alexis Kitchen was sitting on the steps at a friend's house at about 2:30pm when the incident occured. Family and friends pulled the girl from under the tree before EMS arrived.
The girl was treated at West Shore Medical Center and then flown by AeroMed to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Alexis' mom tells Manistee officials that she will be undergoing surgery Friday to insert a rod into her to leg to repair a broken femur. She also suffered injuries to her face and will be meeting with a plastic surgeon.
