GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The Millennium Park Splash Pad is closed until Sunday after the Kent County Health Department noted an increase in the number of cases of cryptosporidiosis this month.

The cases of the common stomach illness were linked to a visit to Millennium Park on or around August 8th.  As a precaution, the Kent County Parks Department is closing the Splash Pad for "Hyper-Chlorination" to clean and disinfect the area.  The area will be closed until Sunday.

The Millennium Park beach area remains open, with reduced admissions fees.

Symptoms of "crypto" include diarrhea, stomach cramping, fever, vomiting, and dehydration.  Symptoms can last one to two weeks.

Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite found in fecal matter of people and some animals.  It is transmitted when children swallow water that is contaminated or not washing hands before handling food.

The CDC recommends that you not swim if you have diarrhea.
