With inland temperatures reaching the 100-degree mark, many people are crowding on Lake Michigan beaches to get relief.
GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (AP) -- The Alliance for the Great Lakes says it aims to draw thousands of volunteers in four states Sept. 15 for the annual adopt-a-beach cleanup event.
The group's Michigan office in Grand Haven says the effort will take place in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. Locally, the efforts will take place in Grand Haven and Holland.
The alliance says volunteers last year picked up at least 15,000 pounds of trash and performed water quality tests.
This year's efforts should be easier because of the dry conditions that that mean there aren't the large trash wash-ups from sewage overflows and flooding.
The group says volunteers can sign up online at www.greatlakesadopt.org .
