Update: Sunday, September 9, 2012 - As of noon on Sunday, the boil water advisory in the Village of Shelby is canceled.

Village leaders say they have determined it is no longer necessary to use bottled water or boil water before drinking or cooking.

Thursday, the village issued a boil water advisory after recent tests detected the presence of coliform bacteria in the water supply.

Since then measures were taken with the help of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and follow up testing confirmed there is now no bacteria in the water supply.

 

SHELBY, Mich. (WZZM) - The Village of Shelby has issued a boil water advisory after recent tests detected the presence of coliform bacteria in the water supply.

Of five routine samples taken in September, two showed coliform bacteria. The standard is that no more than one one sample per month show the presence of coliform bacteria.

As a precaution water should be boiled for one minute before drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, or preparing food.

Coliform bacteria are generally not harmful themselves and are naturally present in the environment. However the bacteria are an indicator that other, potentially harmful bacteria may be present.

The Shelby Water department is not sure what has caused the presents of coliform bacteria in the distribution system. Water department personnel are working to resolve this issue.
