MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM)- The Reeths-Puffer varsity soccer team will be hosting its first purple soccer game against Mona Shores on October 11th.

The athletes have been working both on and off the field in preparation for the game that will raise money for cancer research at Van Andel Institute.

The game will feature everyone wearing purple, fun activities and an appearance by VAI scientists.

Organizers say the boys have been involved in the process which included finding sponsors for their purple uniforms.

Co-Chair Amy Yarian explains, "Our whole goal besides raising money for Van Andel is to empower our students. Hopefully maybe some of our students will be researchers in the future maybe be able to work for Van Andel and hopefully find a cure for cancer."

Co-Chair Susan Blackburn adds, 'I think it's very important because every single one of us has been touched by cancer --whether it's an immediate family member, the neighbor, a teacher. So, these boys they all know it its part of their daily life and its something they can have a hand in hopefully finding a cure and kick it."

Varsity Soccer Coach Keith Knapp says, "Many of these guys have close personal friends who have been directly affected by cancer, even individuals who have been part of this team in indirect ways and are battle it even now. A lot of the guys have been doing the fundraising awareness with their friends in mind.

The goal is to raise between $5-10K. To learn more, click HERE.
