EUREKA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Montcalm County deputies say a team of thieves hit a Greenville-area car dealer, taking a used van and six sets of vehicle tires and rims.
The thieves struck at Ed Koehn Ford-Lincoln in Eureka Township sometime early Wednesday morning, according to a dealership spokesperson. They took three sets of tires and rims from 2013 Ford Taurus SHO sports sedans and three sets from 2013 Ford Edge Limited crossover vehicles -- total worth of the tires and rims is estimated at $26,000. The criminals also took a 2010 Ford Econoline cargo van from the dealership, worth $15,000 to $20,000.
"This was professional theft," says Todd DeLore, a sales consultant at the dealership. "These guys knew what to target, they knew what to hit, when to hit it and to get out of here real quick."
The thieves put the cars on yard bricks while removing the tires, leaving damage to the vehicles' bodies. The cars were dropped down on their brake disks, likely causing more damage that will have to be repaired, though the dealership does not have any immediate estimates on the cost.
Terry Burns, executive director of the Grand Rapids New Car Dealers Association, says there have been similar thefts at dealerships from Holland and Grand Rapids to Gaylord and Grayling. The most recent theft was this past weekend in Petoskey, says Burns.
Tom Tasker, sales manager at Fox Ford in Grand Rapids, says their dealership in Cadillac was recently hit by thieves who also stole tires, rims and a van to transport the contraband.
