Muskegon officer involved in overnight shooting

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) - The Muskegon Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred overnight.

About 12:53 am Monday, a Hackley Hospital security officer reported that a subject driving a red van had fired shots at him near the hospital. The red van was spotted a short time later by an officer at Wood St. and Amity Ave.

After having followed the vehicle for a short time, the officer initiated a traffic stop but the suspect fled. The suspect then exited the vehicle while it was still moving. The vehicle then crashed into a tree.

As the officer exited his cruiser, the suspect ran towards the officer armed with what appeared to be a handgun. The officer fired at the suspect, who was not hit and fled the scene without injury.

A foot chase ensued. The suspect entered a home located in the 500 block of Oak Ave. Officers were allowed into the home, where they found the suspect hiding in a bedroom. The suspect was arrested and and a loaded handgun was recovered.

The suspect, a 19 year old Muskegon resident, who was also on probation, was lodged at the Muskegon County Jail on the following charges: Fleeing Eluding, Felonious Assault,  Possession of a Firearm, Violation of a Conditional Bond.

The involved officer was placed on administrative leave pending the completion of the criminal/internal investigation.
