GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) The fourth year of the Meijer State Games of Michigan will see new sports and an entirely new season.
The West Michigan Sports Commission Monday announced a winter games version of the Meijer State Games to be held next February in the Grand Rapids area. That will follow this summer's games in which the total number of sports will grow from 31 to 36.
The Meijer State Games are an Olympic-style sporting event that draw athletes and their families from all over Michigan to the Grand Rapids area. The Sports Commission reports about 5,800 athletes participated in the 2012 event and injected more than two million dollars into the West Michigan economy.
New sports this summer will include badminton, diving, field hockey, flag football, and ultimate frisbee. The opening ceremonies will return to Fifth-Third Ballpark, which hosted them in 2011.
