LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - A Van Buren County man is in jail with several pending charges after investigators found 18 dead roosters and a stolen mini-bike and quad runner on his property.
Bobby Johnson, 32, was arraigned on several counts Monday afternoon.
Van Buren County Sheriff's deputies responded to an anonymous complaint of possible cockfighting activities going on at a residence on 48th Avenue in Lawrence Township. Johnson met with deputies and showed the officers roosters and hens that he raises, but deputies noticed blood and feathers in the dirt of a pole barn. Johnson told deputies that he had fought one rooster that night.
Investigators obtained a search warrant and found 18 dead roosters from apparent fighting, a large amount of cash, an area used for cockfighting, a stolen quad runner, a stolen mini-bike, and other cockfighting paperwork and paraphenalia. He has been charged with three counts of animal fighting and three counts of receiving and concealing stolen property.
