Calvin plays Wisconsin-Stevens Point Saturday night on the road in round two.
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- It's been eight years since the Calvin men's basketball team has reached the sweet sixteen. They hope to change that Saturday night.
The Knights (25-3) play a second round NCAA Division III Tournament game at Stevens Point, Wisconsin at 8:00 Michigan time. Last weekend, they won their first postseason game since 2007 and admitted disappointment that they were forced to go on the road for the second week in a row. "Obviously we wanted to host the game," says senior guard Bryan Powell. "It was a little unfortunate that we couldn't. (But going on the road) has some benefits. Being able to spend some time with the team is actually a really cool experience. Heading on the bus, going to hotels and stuff. Just a cool college experience."
The Knights go on the road despite owning a better overall record than Stevens Point. "Our opponents' records were not good enough," says head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "I'm not sure how many times you get to be 22-3 in the regular season and then not to host is disappointing. But I understand why it is."
If the Knights advance, they will meet either Wheaton, Illinois or St. Thomas, Minnesota in the sweet sixteen next week. The entire bracket can be found here.
